Vi completes 3G to 4G spectrum reallocation

Vodafone’s Indian unit Vi completed re-farming its 3G spectrum to enhance 4G connectivity in eleven cities in the region of Gujarat, and deployed an additional 5MHz of 2,100MHz band spectrum.

TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate reported, the operator said the additional spectrum enables Vi to expand its 4G coverage, improve network quality and expand capacity in Gujarat.

The cities to see a boost ins services include: Ahmedabad, Anand, Bhavnagar, Gandhidham, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Morbi, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara and Vapi.

Customers on 3G services were offered a free upgrade to a 4G SIM in a bid to reduce disruptions to services stemming from the spectrum reallocation.

Rajendra Chourasia, regional operations director said: “The network augmentation initiative was our endeavor to offer our customers an enhanced 4G experience to complement the data demand.

“Supplementing the existing 4G infrastructure with the expansion on 2,100MHz layer has brought about enhanced data speeds, besides a better indoor network experience for Vi customers in Gujarat. We have completed the 3G to 4G re-farming exercise in eleven top cities in the state so far. Efforts are on to cover the rest of the state at an early date.”

The operator followed re-farming efforts in the region of Bengaluru which also saw Vi migrate from 3G to 4G waves across 3,200 cell sites in December. Vi will also enact the same re-farming process at all sites in Delhi and National Capital Region, whilst also deploying an additional 5MHz of 2100MHz band airwaves in the location.
