A1 Slovenija, the second-largest mobile operator in Slovenia, has launched commercial 5G services, offering download rates of up to 1Gbps.
5G network has gone live in the cities of Ljubljana, Maribor, and Celje, with services available free to any A1 subscriber with a compatible handset, said local media reports.
"Users are automatically given access to a network that delivers speeds of up to 1000/100 megabits per second. The technology will be available free of charge to all users, and high speeds at least until the end of 2021, after which they will be available at an additional cost," it said.
The operator plans to cover at least 60 percent of the population with 5G by the end of 2022.
"With the new technology, we are building wireless optics that will provide our users with reliable, gigabit internet. This is especially important for A1, as we only want to consolidate the leading position of the Internet provider. 46 percent of all mobile internet traffic flows through our network Slovenia, " the reports quoted Dejan Turk, President of the Management Board of A1 Slovenia and A1 Serbia as saying.
Parent company A1 Telekom Austria Group recently selected Nokia to extend its 5G footprint outside of Austria into Bulgaria, Serbia, and Slovenia.
5G was already available in Slovenia via rival operators Telekom Slovenije (launched July 2020) and Telemach (June 2021).
