Green Gibraltar, a new player in the Guyanese mobile market, claims to have received regulatory clearance to offer 5G mobile services.
Stabroek News reports that the new entrant applied for commercial operating licences and spectrum rights covering seven of Guyana’s ten main regions. The majority of these are coastal areas with a larger population - regions Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Four (Demerara-Mahaica), Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) – but Green Gibraltar will also provide services in the more sparsely populated regions Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice). It has not applied to operate in the remaining three regions given their very small and remote populations.
Green Gibraltar describes itself as being “100% Guyanese owned”. Having applied for the operating licences and spectrum in January 2021, the operator has now issued a statement saying: “With the approval of the licence, efforts will now focus on the steps necessary to commence operations.”
However, TeleGeography reports that Guyana’s government has not yet confirmed that it has allocated the licences and spectrum in question to Green Gibraltar. Additionally, the operator has provided no additional explanation of its planned offering, should the licences be issued.
