XL Axiata applies 'Smart Massive MIMO' tech in Indonesia

Indonesia-based mobile telecommunications services operator PT XL Axiata Tbk (XL Axiata) continues to increase network capacity by applying the latest Smart Massive MIMO technology in collaboration with Huawei.

Through a series of trials that have been carried out, the application of this technology has succeeded in increasing the quality and capacity of the network by several times, said a press release from the second-largest mobile telecommunications company in Indonesia.

Director & Chief Technology Officer XL Axiata, I Gede Darmayusa said, "Along with increasing customer needs for data and internet services, we are required to be able to continue to provide the best experience to customers. The increased usage traffic must be balanced with adequate network capacity so that the quality of service does not decrease. For this reason, we are partnering with Huawei to apply this Smart Massive MIMO technology in areas that require additional network capacity.”

Smart Massive MIMO technology is a technology that uses the concept of multiple-input and multiple-output radio that can increase network capacity and spectrum efficiency. Smart Massive MIMO can improve network quality and capacity by utilizing massive antenna array techniques and feature beamforming.

In addition, from a network operational perspective, this technology can increase the spectrum efficiency of the network, thereby helping to reduce network operational burdens.

CEO of Huawei Indonesia Carrier Business, Andy Ma, said, “This technology is an evolution of technology in the 5G era. Huawei Smart Massive MIMO is also an important tool to cope with the rapid growth of network traffic. Huawei will continue to collaborate with XL Axiata in more technical areas to provide the best network experience to improve services and business continuity going forward. Currently, Huawei Smart Massive MIMO technology has been commercialized in more than 60 carrier networks worldwide to improve their network performance and competitiveness.”
