Uruguay readies for number portability in two weeks

Mobile number portability (MNP) is expected to start in Uruguay 12 January 2022, the national regulator Unidad Reguladora de Servicios de Comunicaciones (URSEC) said in a press note.

While the government previously set a start date of 27 December, the operators needed additional time to ensure the system works correctly.

"It is a date agreed with the mobile phone operators, which makes it easier for companies to respond adequately to people's needs, and from which, users will be able to make use of their right," said the release.

Committee on Number Portability (CPN) was integrated and began meeting in September 2020, per the provisions of Law No. 19889 of July 9, 2020.

The Law declares that number portability is a right of users of mobile telephony services. Article 472 states that operators are obliged to offer MNP under the guidelines provided by the regulator and that they will also have to assume the costs of adapting their networks and systems to implement portability.
