Indian telecoms mogul Mukesh Ambani has left the role of director at Reliance Jio Infocomm.
Ambani’s resignation came into effect on 27th June after being cleared by Jio’s board, although he will still be the owner of Reliance Industries, the overarching firm which owns the operator’s parent firm Jio Platforms – where he remains as chairman.
The post of managing director at Jio will be filled by Pankaj Pawar, while Ambani’s son Akash Ambani will take over as the operator’s chairman. Both appointments have been cleared by Jio’s board.
Ambani senior has been a driving force behind Jio since it entered India’s mobile market in 2016. The newcomer offered the country’s cheapest voice and data tariffs at launch, kicking off a price war as rival operators struggled to match its rates. In 2019, Jio surpassed Bharti Airtel to become India’s largest mobile operator by subscribers.
