Thailand green lights Globalstar ground station

Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) gave satellite company Globalstar permission to operate a new ground station, enabling it to sell mobile satellite services throughout the southeast Asian country.

In a statement, Globalstar detailed the ground station will be located at fellow satellite company Thaicom’s Teleport Centre in Patumthani province north of Bangkok.

Globalstar general counsel and VP of regulatory affairs L. Barbee Ponder said: “Globalstar is the first and only LEO constellation of satellites to be authorised to provide service in the Kingdom of Thailand.”

The ground station takes Globalstar’s total to 27 across 17 countries. Ponder added the solutions on offer include satellite services such as critical emergency SOS communications, through a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

Thaicom CEO Patompob (Nile) Suwansiri added: “This collaboration is a strategic move in expanding our portfolio of cooperation with a leading global LEO operator which will complement our existing satellite services.

“Our experience and expertise in the satellite industry, along with Globalstar’s world-class services for personnel safety and management will serve to provide our customers with advanced satellite solutions for the digital era. We believe this strategic alliance between the two companies will lay the foundation for a long-term relationship and sustainable growth in the satellite industry in this region.”
