Telecom Egypt hails final 2Africa cable landing

Telecom Egypt announced the landing of the 2Africa subsea cable in Port Said, a move that will enhance connectivity in Egypt and provide capacity for the operator to grow.

In a statement, CEO and managing director Mohamed Nasr said this is the “final milestone in linking the world’s longest subsea cable to Egypt.”

“We aim to realise more of our potential as we work on new initiatives and roll out cutting-edge products that will take the ICT industry to the next level,” he added.

This is the second and final 2Africa subsea cable to be connected to Egypt. Telecom Egypt added it completed 2Africa's terrestrial crossing in Egypt ahead of schedule in 2020. Meanwhile, it concluded the third marine path connecting the Ras Ghareb and Suez landing stations in October 2022.

The 2Africa cable was launched in May 2020 by a consortium of companies - Telecom Egypt, Meta, China Mobile International, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, Center3 (STC), Vodafone and WIOCC. Alcatel Submarine Networks was contracted to build the cable which starts from Southern Europe, across Africa and the Middle East and ends in the UK.

The cable system is expected to be completed in 2024 and will stretch 45,000km connecting 33 countries through 46 landings
