Guyanese operators declare support for tax break on devices

Guyana’s mobile network operators welcomed with open arms the government’s decision to abolish taxes on mobile phones, in a bid to spur growth in the telecoms sector.

Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT), Digicel Guyana, and ENet issued a joint statement hailing the decision by describing it as a “significant step towards improving information access”. The operators also said the government’s decision will “transform the communications sector” by enabling wider connectivity access for users to tap into educational tools, business opportunities and “foster personal growth”.

Looking ahead, the operators pledged to work with the government to revise prices to reflect the abolition of the tax.

The Guyanese government announced on Friday (June 9) the removal of taxes and duties on mobile phones, it came into effect on Monday (June 12), reported Guyana Times.
