AIS trials mmWave SA 5G with Qualcomm, ZTE

Thai operator AIS partnered with ZTE and Qualcomm to complete a trial of mmWave 5G standalone technology in Bangkok, a step towards the operator commercialising the technology.

In a statement from ZTE, the Chinese vendor detailed the trial was conducted at the AZ centre in Thailand’s capital, showcasing download speeds of up to 7.04Gbps, upload speeds of 2.12Gbps, and latency of less than 4ms.

A single CPE prototype powered by Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System from Qualcomm and ZTE’s latest mmWave AAU network infrastructure equipment was used to conduct the trial.

ZTE detailed the trial lays a roadmap to enable subscribers to tap into use cases such as online gaming, virtual reality, and autonomous vehicles.

AIS head of nationwide operations and support business unit Wasit Watansap said the trial is part of the operator’s goals to provide a growth platform for the Thai digital economy, “which relies on the robustness of digital technology infrastructure”.
