Chile’s telecoms regulator pledged it will monitor the shutdown of 2G networks by demanding operators submit their switch-off plans to prevent subscribers from being disconnected.
Subsecretaria de Telecomunicaciones (Subtel) said that operators must detail their processes and how they will prevent subscribers from being cut off from paid services.
There are currently over 203,000 2G devices connected in Chile as of March, a minority position after the launches of subsequent generations of connectivity.
Subtel also noted 2G networks are less efficient than 3G, 4G and 5G and the sun setting of the legacy technology will free up resources for investment in its successors.
Chilean operator Entel announced this month it will gradually shut down 2G networks from H2 2024, and cease marketing for 2G services in August.
Entel said it has a support plan for subscribers to be affected and a recycling scheme for old 2G devices. Around 100 locations will retain a 2G connection as they will be the only networks available, and seeing shut downs when 4G or 5G can replace them.
