Philippines closes SIM registration at 113m

The Philippines’ National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) announced over 113 million SIM cards have been registered as of the end of July, following a five-day extension and thus ending the SIM registration programme.

Data from the NTC showed 113.96 million SIM cards were registered, which accounts for 67.83% of 168.16 million subscribers (as of December 2022).

Smart Communications and its value-focused mobile brand TNT, had the highest rate of registrations as 52.5 million of its 66.3 million subscribers signed up. Globe Telecom registered more subscribers with 53.7 million out of 86.7 million. The nation’s newest operator Dito Telecommunity saw just over half of its subscribers, 7.7 million out of 14.9 million sign up.

Smart Communications said in a statement that its total figure represented 99% of active users.

“Through SIM Registration, we also support the government's digitalization efforts by helping ensure that mobile and digital services are inclusive and accessible for all," said Alfredo Panlilio, president and CEO of PLDT and Smart.

In a separate statement, Globe head of consumer mobile business Darius Delgado "After seven months of our nationwide registration which brought us to the remote parts of the country, Globe was able to reach the most number of customers successfully. With close to 54 million subscribers registered, we retained our position as the country’s mobile leader.”
