Time dotCom and Huawei deploy SRv6 to boost enterprise offerings

Malaysian telco Time dotCom and Huawei announced on Monday that they have successfully deployed Segment Routing IPv6 (SRv6) technology in Time’s network, which the operator hopes will give it an edge in the enterprise services market.

In simple terms, SRv6 enables segment routing instructions to be inserted directly into IPv6 via an extension header. This effectively simplifies network architecture by reducing the need for multiple control planes and overlay technologies. It also boosts scalability and enables advanced traffic engineering capabilities for better path selection, load balancing, and resource optimization.

What this means for Time dotCom is that SRv6 enables its network to intelligently orchestrate and monitor service pathways in real-time, guaranteeing that essential parameters – including bandwidth, latency and packet loss – adhere to stringent SLAs.

According to Time’s group CTO TJ Ang, that capability will translate into a superior service experience for its enterprise customers, to include delivering consistent bandwidth, ensuring low latency for mission-critical applications, and offering tailor-made service bundles to meet diverse requirements for quality and performance.

“Our transition to SRv6 signifies more than just an upgrade. It’s about redefining how we connect businesses and service providers, ensuring they can rely on a future-proof network that grows with them and adapts to their ever-evolving digital ecosystem,” Ang said.

Zac Chow, VP of Huawei Malaysia's Carrier Network Business Group, said that Time is the first operator in Malaysia to deploy SRv6, which he said is a critical step towards full network digitalisation, automation, end-to-end programmability and network-cloud synergy.

“SRv6 simplifies network protocol types and boasts extensive programmability and high reliability, making it ideal for applications in cross-domain interconnection, large-scale networking, service cloudification, and cloud-network synergy,” he said. “This will redefine experiences for Time customers.”
