Tigo ends connection in a Flash over unpaid bills

Colombian mobile network operator Tigo cut off connectivity access to MVNO Flash Mobile users after the latter failed to pay its last two bills.

BNamericas reported that Tigo initially planned to shut down Flash Mobile’s access to its network on 28 January, but this was postponed by the trade body, the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC), an arm of Colombia’s Ministry of Trade.

Flash Mobile had 100,000 mobile users as of June 2024, according to figures from regulator Mintic.

The MVNO was acquired by Mexican company Diri in January last year. Diri told BNamericas of its ambition to gain one million subscribers in Latin America, a target that was not reached.

In a move that appeared self-cannibalising, Diri then launched another MVNO called Pillofon in Colombia, marketing it to young people via influencers in its home market of Mexico.

The acquisition of Flash Mobile was part of Diri’s strategy to expand its presence outside Mexico and diversify its offerings.
