Indian telco Vodafone Idea (Vi) said on Thursday it has signed a deal with Cisco to deploy an MPLS transport solution in its 4G/5G backhaul network to improve network agility, scalability and operational efficiency.
Vi said the MPLS solution will enable it to boost the reliability and robustness of its network infrastructure, while enabling it to efficiently manage high volumes of data traffic. That in turn will also result in a better experience for 4G and 5G mobile users.
For consumers, that translates to faster, more reliable internet connections for high-quality video streaming, online gaming, video calls, and browsing, while startups and large enterprises get more secure, seamless, connectivity for daily operations and enhanced productivity, Vi said.
The telco added that Cisco’s MPLS transport solution will help it streamline network operations, reduce costs, and accelerate service innovation via dynamic, software-driven management.
“Cisco’s proven expertise in MPLS solutions will empower our network to automate critical network functions, optimise traffic management, and rapidly adapt to changing market demands,” said Vodafone Idea CTO Jagbir Singh in a joint statement.
Gordon Thomson, VP of Cisco’s service provider division for EMEA, said the MPLS solution would enable Vi to deliver faster, more reliable and scalable digital experiences across India.
“Our collaboration with Vi is powering a future-ready network, one that
meets the evolving needs of users,” Thomson said.
Vi and Cisco have collaborated in the past. In 2021, Vi added Cisco’s Ultra Packet Core to its network architecture, adding intelligence and automation capabilities to enable it to flexibly deploy new software applications and services.
