Expansion underway for Malaysian WiMAX firm

A major Malaysian WiMAX operator has outlined its plans for expanding into fibre broadband and LTE.

Packet One Networks (P1) will invest MYR1bn ($ 327m) into its ‘P1 2.0 Evolution Plan’ across the next three years – MYR250m of this will be invested in 2012.

The strategy was unveiled by the firm’s CEO Michael Lai, who explained that the firm would deploy a fibre network in the Klang Valley, with work on TD-LTE deployments finishing around mid-2013.

The deployments are part of a drive to expand the firm’s customer base – Lai stated that P1 is aiming to increase its subscribers from 400,000 to 750,000 by the end of next year, with the goal of 1 million subscribers by 2015.
