Silica buys Internexa’s Argentinian fibre operation

Silica Networks, the telecommunications division of the technology-focused Datco Group, has acquired the operation of wholesale fibre optic connectivity services operator Internexa in Argentina. The purchase of Internexa is said to be Datco Group's 27th acquisition.

Internexa has a wholesale terrestrial fibre optic network extending more than 2,500 kilometres, with access to Chile, Uruguay and Brazil. It has infrastructure in several urban areas in central Argentina.

Silica provides infrastructure, maintenance and internet and fibre optic transport services, linking the main cities of Chile, Argentina, Brazil and the world. It owns a network of over 14,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable with DWDM technology that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through different routes.

According to the BNamericas news service, the sale of Internexa’s operations is part of a new strategy on the part of Colombian company, after its parent, energy transmission, telecommunications management and highway management group ISA, unsuccessfully attempted to sell off the group's entire telecommunications business. However, Brazilian operator Megatelecom recently acquired Internexa's subsidiary in Brazil.

The company says it expects to triple its value over the next five years, with an ambitious investment plan focused on Colombia and Peru.

The three new international connections to be added to Silica Networks' portfolio include an international pass between Chile and Argentina, another between Brazil and Argentina, and a third via the Salto Grande Dam on the Uruguay river on the frontier between Uruguay and Argentina.

BNamericas explains that the latter line connects the city of Concordia in Argentina with Salto in Uruguay before stretching to Uruguayan capital Montevideo and terminating in São Paulo, Brazil,  based on the capacity agreement with the submarine cable that connects Uruguay and Brazil.
