America Movil, a provider of telecommunications services across Latin America, says it will no longer insist on a joint purchase of financially challenged operator Telefonica Chile with another operator, Entel.

According to news service BNamericas, the companies have announced the end of a non‑binding agreement that would allow a joint offer for the Telefonica group's Chilean assets.

So what happens now? Apparently America Movil has indicated that it does not plan to rule out its own offer for Telefonica Chile.

The figures do not make great reading, however. The Chilean operator’s losses apparently reached US$127.6 million this year through September; that’s an increase of 33% compared to the same period in 2024.

As we discussed in detail [in a recent feature](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-business/telecom-trends-forecasts/18477-debt-disruption-and-dead-ends-telefonica-s-tactical-retreat-from-latin-america.html?highlight=WyJ0ZWxlZm9uaWNhIl0=), Telefonica, the Spanish owner of the Chilean operator, is selling all its operations in Latin America, except in Brazil.

Operations in Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay and Colombia went recently. The company left Central America years ago. That leaves Chile, Mexico and Venezuela as its last markets in the region.

BNamericas, points out that Telefonica had the goal of completing the sale in Chile between November and December. However, it adds, no binding proposal was ever submitted.

There are, apparently obstacles, in the form of regulatory difficulties for a sale to two already consolidated groups, price issues, and Telefonica participation in the wholesale company OnNet.
