Multinational telecommunications company AT&T says it has reached an agreement to sell service provider AT&T Mexico to Grupo Televisa, a major Mexican multimedia and telecommunications corporation, and investment firm Fintech Holdings for US$2 billion.

This transaction, it says, sharpens its focus on building the strongest fibre and 5G network in the United States. It adds that its effort to consolidate and modernise Mexico's second scaled wireless network has well positioned AT&T Mexico for its next phase of growth.

It also argues that these opportunities are best undertaken by a local operator that brings attractive assets to improve the overall customer value proposition.

The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027.

As the Data Centre Dynamics website points out, AT&T entered the market in 2014 after acquiring Grupo Iusacell SA for $2.5 billion. It acquired the Mexican business of NII Holdings a year later for $1.9 billion.

However, after more than a decade in the market, the carrier's market share in the country is around 18%. Although this makes it the second-largest mobile operator, it is well behind Telcel, which commands around 64% market share. AT&T currently has more than 24.7 million wireless subscribers in Mexico.

It seems a sale of the unit has been on the cards for some time. Data Centre Dynamics suggests there were rumours last December that Grupo Televisa was nearing a deal to acquire AT&T's Mexican unit.

For Televisa, the deal would significantly boost its operations in Mexico, growing its share of total fixed and wireless subscribers in Mexico to 19% from 8%.
