Zimbabwe is investing US$6 million into improving rural connectivity.
POTRAZ (Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe) has launched the Passive Telecommunications Infrastructure Project, which will see 20 shared base stations deployed across eight of Zimbabwe’s regions.
The initiative is receiving support from the Universal Services Fund, and will deploy network equipment in the provinces of Manicaland, Masvingo, Midlands, Matabeleland North and South, and Mashonaland Central, East and West.
In a statement, POTRAZ representative George Manyaya said: “The project aims to bridge the digital divide as witnessed by the upsurge in the country’s mobile and internet penetration rates. We expect, upon completion of the project, mobile telecoms firms will share the infrastructure and the facilities.”
