The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is calling for feedback on its mobile number portability proposals via a public consultation.
The Colombo Gazette notes that holding the consultation is the next proscribed phase of the procedure outlined by the government last year for introducing MNP, with industry representatives, academics and stakeholders all asked to provide their opinions on the implementation. Feedback is expected before 12th February 2021.
It’s easy to argue that ‘preliminary’ steps are long overdue; as noted by TeleGeography, TRCSL first started mulling the introduction of MNP in 2008-2009 before inviting consulting firms to help define the regulatory framework for the process in 2010.
Little was heard on the matter until 2014, when the regulator’s then-director general Anusha Palpita stated that the TRC had paused the implementation of MNP until there were more postpaid subscribers in the market, as otherwise it would not be cost-effective.
