Iran preparing to auction 5G-ready 3.5GHz spectrum

The government of Iran is pressing ahead with the auction of 3.5GHz spectrum, which will allow operators to deliver 5G services.

Local news outlet PressTV quoted Nastaran Mohseni, the deputy head of the country’s Communication Regulatory Authority (CRA), as saying that while US trade sanctions created difficulties in acquiring compatible equipment, spectrum in the band would be auctioned nonetheless.

Iran’s largest mobile provider MCI (Mobile Communication Company of Iran) is aiming to launch a commercial 5G offering by March 2021. As reported by TeleGeography, MCI’s head of technical and network development Morteza Taheribakhsh warned that the auction should enshrine the sharing of frequencies between operators to avoid a monopoly developing.
