Regulator the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has a new director general following the early exit of Ezra Chiloba last year. He is David Mugonyi, the former Head of the Presidential Communication Service.
Mugonyi, who has over 20 years of leadership experience in the public and commercial sectors, is set to start his new job on 15 January. He holds a Master's Degree in International Journalism from City University in the UK, and a Bachelor's Degree in Education and a Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi.
His predecessor was appointed in September 2021 for a four-year renewable term but resigned from the office in October 2023 after being suspended for alleged misuse of position and conflict of interest.
In his previous job Mugonyi is said to have played a pivotal role as the primary advisor on communications, perception, and reputation management. However, the new post is likely to make some different demands on its new boss.
The ITWeb Africa site describes CA as Kenya's ICT regulatory body, with responsibilities in telecommunications, cybersecurity, e-commerce, broadcasting, multimedia, and postal/courier services.
The body is also in charge of managing the country's numbering and frequency spectrum resources, as well as maintaining and administering the Universal Service Fund and protecting the rights of ICT service customers.
