Huawei crafts management software to replace US tech

Huawei announced it has developed a key enterprise IT management software to cut its use of a solution from Oracle, as the vendor strives to become less reliant on US technology.

In a statement, the company revealed MetaERP (enterprise resource planning system) which is already being used in internal systems handling 100% of Huawei's business scenarios and 80% of its business volume. It could be used in multiple segments including accounting and supply chain management.

Huawei noted the move was spurred when it began “facing increased external pressure and business challenges” in 2019 when the US government placed the vendor on a security entity list, deeming it a potential threat to national security.

US technology companies are banned from selling software and components to companies on the list without a special permit. As companies on the entities list could be a threat to national security, according to the US government, by providing the Chinese government with backdoors to critical infrastructure.

Huawei board member and president of the quality business process & IT management department, Tao Jingwen, said: "We were cut off from our old ERP system and other core operation and management systems more than three years ago. Since then, we have not only been able to build our own MetaERP, but also manage the switch and prove its capabilities. Today we are proud to announce that we have broken through the blockade. We have survived!"
