Huawei pursues ICT education initiatives in three African countries

Technology giant Huawei has been busy with information and communication technologies (ICT) education initiatives in recent weeks – in Kenya, Ethiopia and Egypt.

Huawei is now accepting applications for Kenya's Seeds for the Future Programme 2024. The programme aims to develop local ICT talent, improve knowledge sharing, and raise awareness and enthusiasm in the technology sector. Applications opened last week; Huawei will complete the process on 30 April.

Over the last nine years, more than 240 Kenyan students have received virtual training. For the 2024 edition, the Seeds for the Future programme will return to its physical form, with Huawei exposing participants to 5G technologies, cloud computing and AI. Participants will meet with global IT experts and will receive a programme graduation certificate upon completion.

Huawei and Kenya’s Information and Communications Technology Authority are jointly working together on the programme.

In Ethiopia meanwhile, Ethiopia's Addis Ababa University (AAU) and Huawei last week signed a cooperation agreement that will boost Ethiopian students' access to industry experience on ICT.

As part of the signed memorandum of understanding (MoU), Huawei Ethiopia and the AAU will increase collaboration in talent and skill cultivation in the ICT sector. The agreement will also enable AAU students to intern at Huawei Ethiopia and gain more practical ICT experience.

Finally, late March saw the signing of two cooperation protocols between Egypt’s National Telecommunication Institute (NTI) and Huawei Egypt to establish two academies. The first academy will specialise in building young people’s digital capacities and providing training on advanced technologies, while the other will provide training on fibre optics technology.

The NTI-Huawei cooperation aims to benefit 18,000 young people nationwide over five years.
