Chinese device maker Xiaomi has released its own shipment data for Q1 2019 after dismissing calculations released by analysts as “inaccurate and unfair.”
While Xiaomi will disclose the exact number in its official Q1 results call, the vendor went on record to state that its shipments had “exceeded 27.5 million units” in the quarter.
Research firm IDC reported that the vendor had sold 25 million, which would represent a 10.2% year-on-year decline from 27.8 million. Strategy Analytics estimated a smaller drop of 2.3%, reporting 27.5 million sold last quarter as compared with 28.3 million in the same quarter last year. Canalys appeared to be nearest Xiaomi’s official figures, reporting 27.8 million devices sold compared to 28.2 million last year.
While the decline is far from pronounced, the Chinese appetite for smartphones appears to be on the wane, so Xiaomi’s announcement is likely intended as an assurance that it is performing steadily despite the competition – particularly as IDC’s estimates would indicate that the vendor was losing ground in China.
