South Africa’s Telkom requests phone-ready soap operas

South African operator Telkom has announced a new streaming platform that will focus on local content, which it will bring to a number of devices, including mobile phones.

The TelkomONE streaming service will be available via the web, mobile apps and streaming boxes. It will come in daily, weekly and monthly subscription plans. It will also include a wide range of TV channels, all available to Telkom customers on multiple devices.

Underlining the mobile element, as well as local input, is a new competition that has been created to encourage content creators to share their output. The competition is categorized into three genres where content producers can enter their submissions: comedy, lifestyle and ‘mobivelas’. Mobivelas, as the name suggests, refers to telenovelas – or soap operas – for mobile only.

Both cash prizes and assistance with content production are among the prizes. In fact the winner of each category will receive a R100,000 (about $6,077) cash injection to make content that will be featured on the TelkomONE platform for viewing by its audience.

This competition will run until 30 November. No professional experience is required to enter but entrants do have to be over 18 years of age. They will need to submit at least one but no more than three five-to-ten-minute-long short clips to support their entry.
