US-based travel app Tripadvisor was banned by the Chinese government as part of a list of 105 apps, which were deemed to promote pornography, prostitution, gambling, violence, and obscene content.
In a statement, the Cyberspace Administration of China said the apps violated up to three cyber laws without providing details for each app.
This is part of a fresh campaign from the authority in response to netizens reporting offensive content. The apps were lined up for purging on November 5.
The authority said it will continue to promote the “rectification of mobile applications” and strengthen its supervision of mobile apps in a bid to “clean up and dispose of illegal” apps to create clean cyberspace.
Reuters noted, China regulates its cyberspace with a heavy hand, dishing out punishments for rule-breakers even to those from the country as well as foreign ones.
