Nigeria’s home-grown e-commerce sector awaits the arrival of Amazon

Local press reports in Nigeria are full of dire warnings about online retail superbrand Amazon’s plans for growth and how it could affect home-grown online retail. According to recently unearthed documents the company is apparently set to roll out in Nigeria in April 2023.

In fact it seems that Amazon’s plans include Belgium, Chile, Colombia and South Africa as well as Nigeria, where Amazon will try to make its presence felt in a market dominated by Nigeria’s local e-commerce giants Konga and Jumia. Jumia was, as we reported in 2019, the first tech start-up from Africa to float on Wall Street.

Amazon’s reach extends at the moment to some 21 countries. All new additions to Amazon’s markets are planning to launch with their own marketplace and access to Amazon’s fulfilment service. Amazon’s Prime membership paid subscription service will also be introduced in the new markets.

But is this all bad news? A report on the restofworld.org website argues that Amazon’s expansion means a hiring drive in Nigeria. In fact, it suggests, Amazon has been quietly recruiting salespeople and engineers in Lagos. It has also hired a major advertising agency to work on a push for Prime Video subscribers in Nigeria, while investing in production and licensing deals with local film and television studios, implying that a boost for home-grown TV and film productions may be on the way.
