Africell Angola plans to launch free mobile TV service

After a successful launch, Africell, Angola’s newest operator, is keeping up the pressure on its rivals with a major new offering: free mobile TV.

As we reported in May, it hasn’t taken long for Africell to grow a subscriber base. In fact soon after the April 2022 launch it passed the two million subscriber point and is now estimated to have more than five million customers.

However, Africell is clearly keen to accelerate its growth and increase revenues. Hence a new deal with the British company Perception Group to launch a free television service in Angola using the bespoke product Perception TV CDN.

The television service, called AfriTV, is scheduled to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2022. It will be accessible to Africell Angola’s mobile network subscribers.

The content offering will include leading Portuguese language linear TV channels with automated seven days catch up TV. It will also include new channels auto-scheduled from Portuguese language VoD libraries and exciting social media video content. Perception has invited Portuguese content partners to join the service and benefit from this model.

The partners say AfriTV will provide attractive free content for all ages, delivered in high-quality native apps for all popular platforms. All Africell customers will be pre-registered with the apps at launch.

Arguing that video is a key driver to increasing customer acquisition, retention and growth in data consumption, Africell and Perception are partnering on the basis of sharing incremental data revenue generated by AfriTV content with content partners.

The service is delivered using Perception TV CDN’s private TV CDN platform which has an in-built OTT and IPTV platform feature set. All streaming is secure and limited to Africell’s mobile network in Angola.
