Wananchi Group, a cable TV and broadband Internet services provider has contracted Kenyan based system integrator, Seven Seas Technologies to deploy an all digital TV service in Kenya, to be branded Zuku.
Wananchi, which has a presence in many African countries, is working in partnership with Cisco. The move will enable the Kenyan TV viewers to have access to interactive content, VoIP services and Data services over a single network infrastructure.
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system where a digital television service is delivered using Internet Protocol over a network infrastructure, which may include delivery by a broadband connection. A general definition of IPTV is television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional broadcast and cable formats, is received by the viewer through
the technologies used for computer networks.
For residential users, IPTV is often provided in conjunction with Video on Demand and may be bundled with Internet services such as Web access and VoIP. The commercial bundling of IPTV, VoIP and Internet access is referred to as "Triple Play" service (when these three are offered with mobility, the service is referred to as "Quadruple Play").
With the acquisition of Scientific Atlanta, Cisco Systems offers end-to-end video solutions including Cisco cable TV solutions, scalable, standards-based IPTV solution, VoD, network PVR, time-shift TV, and other services on platforms that can deliver future services from a variety of sources to a multitude of subscriber devices.
