Colibria has been selected by Telefonica International to launch mobile Instant Messaging (IM) services across its Latin American operator businesses, covering over 124 million subscribers in 13 territories. Initially live with Movistar Peru, Colibria will provide a complete end-to-end Movistar Messenger service with a rich set of messaging and presence features, and full integration with SMS.
The Movistar Peru Messenger service is available to all of its 13.1 million subscribers through a full range of Colibria downloadables and web-based clients. In addition, a SIM browser provides access for users with non-Java handsets or those without IP capable phones, ensuring that there is service access to 100% of Movistar Peru's subscriber base.
The Peruvian mobile market reflects the continued aggressive growth being seen in the rest of Latin America, with IE Market Research revealing in its 4Q08 Peru Mobile Operator Forecast 2008 - 2010 report that the number of total subscribers in Peru will increase from a projected 18.75 million in 2008 to 24.3 million by 2010. With only 7.6 million fixed-internet users in comparison, according to Internet World Stats, operator-own community messaging such as Movistar Peru's new IM service offers a compelling service to mobile subscribers who do not already have access to a traditional fixed-line service, driving subscriber usage and enhancing the overall experience.
The Movistar Messenger service will also feature access to Facebook Platform, allowing users to receive updates from their Facebook stream direct to their mobile, and to update their status and post photos to their Facebook account on the move. Other social networks and internet communities will be added to Movistar Messenger through Colibria's Social Network Gateway. In addition, Movistar Peru will make further applications available to subscribers from launch, eg, Translate (a language translation service), with an option to extend its catalogue of value-added services over time, based on the needs of its users.
Colibria is providing the Movistar Messaging Service as a hosted, managed service from a centralised location, ensuring rapid roll-out across Movistar operators in Latin America and enabling a single Movistar community across the region.
