Ethio Telecom brings electronic top-up to Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s sole service provider Ethio Telecom is introducing an electronic recharge solution.

The PreTUPS solution is provided by mobility solutions specialist Mahindra Comviva, and will allow Ethio Telecom’s 29.4 million customers customers to top up their phones electronically. Previously, customers have relied on more a voucher-based system for this service.

The transition is part of Ethio Telecom’s strategic plan to expand its infrastructure’s capacity to accommodate 59 million customers by 2015. PreTUPS, an open standard-based next generation prepaid solution, will enhance customer convenience by extending assisted electronic recharge services. The solution will also benefit Ethio Telecom by enabling them to manage a wide distribution network and reduce costs associated with traditional paper-based vouchers.

Srinivas Nidugondi, Senior VP & Head of Mobile Financial Solutions, Mahindra Comviva said, “We are confident that PreTUPS will help Ethio Telecom to edge closer to the goal of expanding its customer capacity by 2015. Our offering will enable Ethio Telecom subscribers to enjoy the greater flexibility provided by PreTUPS that will allow the operator to synchronise supply and demand in real-time.”
