SDC (Secure Digital Container), a technology provider for Digital Rights Management (DRM) in music, is to power a landmark full-track mobile music download service in China. The new service will be the first of its kind in the rapidly growing Chinese mobile content market to be DRM-protected. It will be offered by Beijing Digital Telecom, the country's leading mobile handset retailer, in collaboration with SDC and Siemens. The service uses SDC's advanced wireless DRM technology and the SDC Java Media Player in order to fully protect artists' copyright and to meet international and Chinese record industry requirements for mobile distribution. Siemens will operate the service via its Music2You (M2Y) platform, which also incorporates the ADORA rights management platform supplied by SDC's sister company Digital World Service (DWS).

Scheduled for launch on January 31 in time for the Chinese New Year festivities, the new service will offer titles from a number of local and international labels for download via China Mobile's WAP portal. Customers will be able to select music titles from a comprehensive catalogue and then download the complete version, with CD sound quality, straight to their mobile phones.

Beijing Digital Telecom is to market the service throughout its vast retail network in China. The company has over 800 retail outlets in the country, covering 24 cities and provinces. The service will be sold direct to consumers using China Mobile's network and billing system, making it available to more than 250 million subscribers.

"China is looking to become the world's largest market for mobile music and SDC is supported by more than 100 handsets, including Chinese manufacturer ZTE. It makes a lot of sense to be partnering with Beijing Digital Telecom," says Michael Bornhäusser, CEO, SDC.

SDC's mobile DRM solution enables secure video, full length music and other rich-media-content distribution across wireless devices and PCs, and has been adopted and deployed by 18 major carriers worldwide to date. Current customers include T-Mobile (Czech Republic) and Hutch (India).

* SDC is a Swiss-based company established in 1994 and is a DRM technology provider for mobile music services. It works alongside leading players in DRM to deliver the promise of mobile content distribution. SDC is privately owned and headquartered in Basle, Switzerland.
