A new OTT giant?

A new OTT giant?

OTT services continue to be a hot topic lately, as recent news from India and Latin America proves.

Media and entertainment conglomerate Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEE) has become the first Indian entertainment company to roll out its over-the-top (OTT) video service, ZEE5, to over 190 countries. Zee’s worldwide presence means it now joins giants such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video with a worldwide presence of vast scale.

As part of the launch, ZEE5 will be accessible across the web and android and iOS platforms. The service will then roll out across connected devices such as smart TVs, Amazon FireTV stick and Apple TV.

In some markets, the services will be offered as a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD). In others, notably the Middle East and North African markets, there will be a so-called ‘freemium’ model where some library and ZEE content is ad-supported and there is a small subscription fee for originals and premium movies.

Meanwhile, Spanish multimedia communications group Mediapro is preparing to launch a Spanish-speaking OTT service dedicated to eSports. It will be available by the end of this year globally but will have a special focus on Spain and Latin American markets.

The aim is reach five million users within five years with a service that will initially be available for free and then will add premium content. Mediapro will also launch a channel specialized in eSports through traditional pay TV operators.
