Philippine telco Globe Telecom says it has signed a data-sharing agreement (DSA) with digital bank GoTyme in a move meant to combat digital fraud and other online financial crimes.
Under the agreement announced on Monday, Globe will share with GoTyme information related to mobile numbers potentially being used by fraudsters, to include names, addresses, and contact details.
Globe said in a statement that the data-sharing arrangement would help law enforcement officials and courts obtain information about suspected scammers faster, rather than spend months seeking a warrant to access the same info.
Globe also said the DSA with GoTyme is a response to a call by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the National Privacy Commission for financial institutions and telcos to work together to fight fraud.
“This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to championing cybersecurity and protecting our customers from the growing threats in the digital world,” said Globe’s chief privacy officer Irish Salandanan-Almeida in a statement.
"This DSA with Globe augments the bank's cybersecurity systems and measures to protect customers from cyber criminals and fraudsters,” said GoTyme chief information security officer Albert Dela Cruz in a statement.
Mobile and online scams have become a growing problem in the Philippines. According to ABS-CBN, citing stats from anti-scam app Whoscall, the number of scam calls and messages in the Philippines grew a whopping 200% during the first eight months of 2024, compared to the same period the previous year.
