Data centre deal brings EdgeConneX to Tel Aviv

EdgeConneX, which provides a full range of data centre solutions worldwide, has agreed to acquire Global Data Center (GDC), an Israel-based data centre operator headquartered in Herzliya, the hub of Israel’s hi-tech district.

Once completed, the acquisition will bring two new facilities into the EdgeConneX global data centre platform.

Global Data Center was founded in 2013 and operates two highly secure, subterranean data centres in the area of Tel Aviv. Its first facility in this area was a 4,500 square metre data centre in Herzliya. This year GDC opened its second facility in Petah Tikva, a $30 million site spanning 6,000 square metres in its first phase, with 15MW of power available. Both sites are built in accordance with the Tier 3 Uptime global standard.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but, according to the website Data Centre Dynamics, local media reports indicate a price tag of over $200 million. According to GDC nothing will change practically in regard to Global Data Center for its Israeli customers, organizationally, operationally or strategically.

Investment group EQT Infrastructure acquired EdgeConneX in 2020, helping to fund its global expansion. EdgeConneX operates over 40 facilities in 33 markets across North America, Europe, and South America.

The company is building new data centres in Spain and Chile, and this year announced a new joint venture in India with Adani Enterprise to develop 1GW of data centre capacity in the country over the next 10 years.
