Ghanaian broadband wireless access (BWA) provider Surfline Communications has shuttered its data centre and radio access network (RAN), citing financial problems.
The news was confirmed by the Director General of Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) Joe Anokye, who stated: “Surfline actually wrote to us that they shut down their data centre. Prior to that, they informed us that they were shutting down their radio access network because of cost. I think it is a major liquidity issue and I think it’s been very challenging for them.”
Local outlet GraphicOnline reported that Surfline has published a statement assuring customers that it has “experienced a total network downtime resulting in service interruption” and that its management is “working very hard with all external stakeholders to resolve the matter” and that it expects the network to resume service.
NCA data showed Surfline to have 35,796 BWA subscriptions as of end-2022, giving it a share of just over 25% of the fixed broadband market.
