NeutraDC Nxera Batam starts work on AI hyperscale data centre

Indonesian data data centre firm NeutraDC Nxera Batam announced on Friday that it has begun construction of a new hyperscale data centre in Batam designed specifically to support artificial intelligence infrastructure.

NeutraDC – the data centre unit of state-owned telco Telkom Indonesia – Nxtera owner SingTel and Medco Power Indonesia are investing a total Rp1.4 trillion (US$85 million) over the next five years to build the new 51MW data centre in the Kabil Industrial Area in Batam City. Medco will also provide the electricity supply for the data centre, which it said will originate from renewable energy sources.

Telkom broke ground on the site at the end of 2022. The hyperscale data centre is scheduled to commence operations in the third quarter of 2025.

NeutraDC Nxera Batam CEO Indrama YM Purba said in November 2023 that the new facility is being built in Batam in part because of its close geographical proximity to Singapore, enabling it to cash in on overflow from Singapore’s data centres. The company also wants to turn Batam into a major data centre hub for Southeast Asia in its own right.

At a piling ceremony on Thursday, NeutraDC Nxera Batam also announced it had signed two MoUs to develop digital talent and natural resource management.

Under one MoU, NeutraDC and Batam State Polytechnic, will collaborate to implement various programs to support human resource development for the data centre industry.

NeutraDC also signed a MoU with Kabil Indonusa Estate, which will provide and maintain clean water for the data center development area.
