MainOne, Solutions by Equinix, which provides connectivity and data centre solutions in West Africa, said on Tuesday it has acquired and lit up capacity on the Equiano subsea cable to add more redundancy to its services.
Nigeria-based MainOne said the capacity on Equiano provides an additional layer of resiliency for its enterprise customers, ensuring uninterrupted service to support their business at no additional cost.
MainOne didn’t say how much additional capacity Equiano will provide, but acknowledged that the move was a response to network disruptions caused by subsea cable cuts last year on both sides of the African continent.
Awareness of diverse routing is high across Africa in the wake of numerous subsea cable outages around the African continent this year. On the western coast, four cables – WACS, MainOne, South Atlantic 3 and ACE – were damaged by an undersea canyon avalanche incident off the coast of Cote d’Ivoire. Google’s Equiano subsea – which runs along the same route between South Africa and Portugal – was undamaged.
Oluwasayo Oshadami, Director, Solutions Architect at MainOne, Solutions by Equinix, said the company said it is taking proactive steps to fortify its network to ensure business continuity for its customers.
“We understand the technical complexities and cost associated with building and managing redundant network infrastructure,” he said in a statement. “Our customers can remain focused on the core of their business operations, not on the intricacies of managing multiple networks, fail-overs or resilience.”
Equinix acquired MainOne in 2022, although full integration of the two companies’ operations was reportedly completed in October 2024, after whichMainOne was rebranded as MainOne, Solutions by Equinix.
