Google is reportedly planning to invest US$6 billion to establish its first data centre in India, with a planned IT load capacity of 1GW that would make it one of the largest such facilities in Asia-Pacific.

According to a report published Wednesday by Reuters, citing unnamed government sources, Google intends to build the gigawatt data centre in the southern port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The US$6 billion investment figure includes US$2 billion in renewable energy capacity to power the data centre, the report said.

Google’s parent company Alphabet has not confirmed the report.

Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh's information technology minister, didn’t confirm the Google plan specifically, but told Reuters the state has finalised data centre investments with a total capacity of 1.6GW, with those facilities set to be ready for service in the next 24 months.

“There are certain announcements which are not yet public,” Lokesh was quoted as saying. “In October, we will make those announcements.”

Earlier this month, Sify Technologies obtained approval from the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) to develop a 550MW data centre in Visakhapatnam in a project valued at INR164.6 billion (US$1.87 billion).

In February, Andhra Pradesh announced plans to develop a 500-acre Data City in Madhurawada, a major business and residential area of Visakhapatnam.

For perspective, real estate consultancy Anarock said that total operational data centre capacity in all of India currently stands at 1.4GW, the Reuters report said.

Lokesh also said Andhra Pradesh also plans to establish three subsea cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam to support its coming data centre boom, the report added.

According to Data Centre Magazine, the largest operational data centre by IT load capacity in the APAC region is China Mobile’s data centre in Harbin, with an estimated capacity of 200MW.

However, larger data centres are being planned elsewhere. Last year, according to Data Center Dynamics, SK Telecom announced plans to build gigawatt AI data centres in South Korea.

In February 2025, also in South Korea, the Wall Street Journal reported that Fir Hills – a subsidiary of investment firm Stock Farm Road (SFR) – signed an MoU with the government of Jeollanam-do to build a 3GW AI data centre.
