According to regional press reports, Google is planning its to build a data centre for storage and server management in Uruguay — the second country in Latin America, after Chile, to house a Google data centre.

It will be sited in Canelones in the south of the country. It will occupy a space of more than 20 hectares in the duty-free zone of the city’s Science Park.

This is not Google’s first Uruguayan project, however. Google has already been involved in subsea cable projects alongside state-owned telecommunications company Antel Uruguay. In July this year Google Argentina and Antel announced plans to extend the Tannat subsea cable to the coastal city of Las Toninas in the Buenos Aires province in Argentina. The 2000km Brazil-Uruguay Tannat subsea cable has been operational since mid-2018, connecting Santos, Brazil, to Maldonado, Uruguay.

Antel is also part of a consortium, alongside Google, Brazil’s Algar Telecom, and Angola’s Angola Cable, that owns the Monet cable system connecting Boca Raton in Florida to both Fortaleza and Santos in Brazil.

Google’s first facility in Latin America, in Quilicura in Chile, came online in 2015. Since then, Google has announced plans to expand this centre with a $140m investment that will triple the size of the campus in Chile to 11.2 hectares.

Earlier this year it was reported that Google is planning to build another Chilean data centre – a $200 million facility in Santiago. Construction is due to begin early next year.

Google owns and operates data centres all over the world. Its website lists 19. The facility in Quilicura is described as one of the most environmentally friendly data centres in Latin America.
