Globe Telecom announced on Wednesday that it has become the second Philippine telco to join the GSMA’s Open Gateway Initiative for standardised open network APIs, just after rival PLDT did the same.
Under an MoU signed last Friday, Globe will have access to the Open Gateway framework that promises interoperable access to mobile networks through the Linux Foundation’s standards-based CAMARA repository.
Open Gateway has made eight standardised network APIs available so far, mostly related to security and fraud prevention: SIM Swap, Quality on Demand, Device Status, Number Verification, Simple Edge Discovery, One Time Password (SMS), Carrier Billing – Check Out, and Device Location.
Globe said it sees immediate potential for these APIs in sectors such as e-health, agritech, emergency services and carbon accounting. The telco also said open APIs could benefit sectors such as education, entertainment, e-commerce and transportation.
Moreover, said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu, Open Gateway APIs will enable the telco to optimise its 5G network, particularly for IoT use cases.
"Leveraging open APIs across various sectors will help us significantly scale our ICT portfolio, even as we pursue our mission to solve our customers' pain points at scale,” Cu said in a statement. “Enabling seamless integration and innovation will significantly help API development and improve user experiences.”
PLDT – along with wireless subsidiary Smart Communications and B2B arm PLDT Enterprise – signed an MoU to join Open Gateway last week.
