Sudan’s three main operators have received a court order to restore internet services after they shuttered access following a military coup last month.
Reuters reported that lawyer Abdelazim Hassan lodged a complaint on behalf of the Sudanese Consumer Protection Society calling for Sudatel and the local units of MTN and Zain to restore intenet access immediately. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) described blocking internet access as “a violation of international law.”
Led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the coup has ousted Sudan’s previous power-sharing arrangement that allowed civilians equal say alongside the country’s military. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has been placed under house arrest, and a number of civilian politicians have also been detained.
CommsUpdate reports that negotiations are proving ineffective, with al-Burhan claiming he will install a technocratic cabinet before holding elections in July 2023.
