Iliad completes UPC Poland acquisition

Iliad Group has closed its acquisition of cable operator UPC Poland from Liberty Global for a total of PLN7 billion (US$1.6 billion).

The deal was first announced in September 2021, and follows Iliad’s purchase of Polish operator Play towards the end of 2020. In addition to shoring up the group’s foothold in Poland, the UPC acquisition will bolster Iliad’s efforts to become a “new convergence leader” in Poland’s consumer and enterprise sectors.

By folding in UPC Poland’s subscriber base, Play will gain an additional 3.7 million fibre connections and 1.6 million fixed-line customers. The operator’s CEO Jean-Marc Harion said: “we now have the largest mobile network, fastest fibre and broadest content offering in Poland”, and claimed this would allow the operator to “reinvent convergence.”
