Infrastructure provider Bahrain Network (BNET) announced late last week the launch of a project to transfer all the kingdom's copper internet networks to an ultra-high-speed fibre network.
This project is described by BNET as being in alignment with the kingdom’s Sixth National Telecommunications Plan (NTP6) and BNET's goal to contribute to Bahrain being a prominent digital hub in the region by delivering gigabit-speed broadband internet access.
Through this project BNET says it will significantly contribute to enhancing the internet experience for residents and businesses, further solidifying Bahrain's position as a pioneer in internet speed and improving Bahrain’s ranking – not least because, it says, the old copper lines are incapable of providing equivalent speeds to fibre.
The project includes migrating 100% of existing copper customers to fibre optic services. BNET says this will increase fibre penetration by approximately 15% and provide high-speed fixed broadband to meet the needs of individuals and businesses across Bahrain.
During the project period, licensed operators will reach out to copper line customers to schedule their fibre optic line upgrade appointments before disconnecting copper lines.
Indeed, Engineer Mohamed Humaid, Project Manager, BNET, has assured customers that the change will minimise inconvenience, saying: “We've designed this project with user convenience in mind. The retail service providers will be readily available to address any questions and guide you through the upgrade process. We're confident that transitioning to fibre will dramatically enhance your internet experience."
