State-owned Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTLC) and Kenya’s ICT Authority (ICTA) have implemented and launched a new terrestrial fibre link connecting Dar-Es-Salaam to Mombasa.
For Tanzania – which has international connectivity via three subsea cables in Dar es Salaam – the new link provides the country with an alternate terrestrial route that provides extra resiliency by giving it e to Kenya’s eight subsea cable links.
“This route ensures Tanzania remains digitally connected even in the event of issues with our marine landing stations in Dar es Salaam,” said Jerry William Silaa, Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, in a statement during a launch ceremony on Friday at the Lunga Lunga/Horohoro border area.
According to Tanzania’s Daily News, Silaa also said that Tanzania is now digitally linked with six countries including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia and Mozambique, and that plans are underway to extend its national fibre network to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Meanwhile, a statement from Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MICDE) said the new link will boost digital connectivity across the East Africa region.
At the launch ceremony, MICDE cabinet secretary William Kabogo Gitau said the fibre link will also boost cross-border trade, spur regional e-commerce and help bridge the digital divide beyond borders.
Kabogo added that regional collaboration is instrumental for strengthening policy and regulatory frameworks that will govern the digital space and secure networks in both countries.
