Fibre accounts for 10% of broadband connections in Latin America in Q1 2017

According to latest research conducted by Dataxis, fixed broadband connections for Latin America in the first quarter of 2017 reached 68.11 million.

The market recorded an increase of 5.9% from Q1 2016 and reached 35.8% household penetration. In the first quarter of 2017, DSL technology still dominates the market with 51.5% of the market and is the only broadband alternative that shows a progressive loss of subscribers.

DSL is in the process of being replaced by Fibre To The Home (FTTH/FTTx), the fastest growing option.  Moreover, fibre already had 10.6% of household connections in Q1 2017. Cable Modem reached 37.9% of the market compared with 36.7% for the previous year.

The top five markets accounted for 81.8% of total connections are: Brazil (35.9%), Mexico (23.1%), Argentina (10.1%), Colombia (8.3%) and Chile (4.4%). Mexico is the only market led by a historical telecom operator (Telmex), while other countries are already dominated by Cable TV operators.

América Móvil is the top Latin American broadband player with 33% of connections, followed by Telefónica (19%) and Televisa Group (5%). After Telecom Argentina’s acquisition, Clarin Group would have almost 6% of Latam connections, rising to the third position in the ranking.
