Eutelsat Communications is back in the news again after the satellite operator was selected by African digital solutions provider Globacom to bring satellite broadband to underserved regions of Nigeria.
This is a multi-year, multi-Gbps wholesale capacity contract, enabling Globacom to extend its coverage beyond the reach of its terrestrial infrastructure, leveraging the Eutelsat Konnect satellite.
The service will be used to deliver high-speed broadband via satellite to both businesses and communities in unconnected and underserved areas throughout Nigeria.
Globacom, trading under the name Glo, is a multinational telecommunications company and the second largest operator in Nigeria, with a market share of about 28 percent and over 51 million subscribers.
In service since early 2021, Eutelsat Konnect is a new-generation high throughput satellite offering what Eutelsat calls unprecedented operational flexibility.
Delivering significant resources for broadband services with quasi-complete coverage of sub-Saharan Africa, it addresses direct-to-user consumer and enterprise broadband services, with a comprehensive range of packages from bite-sized ‘pay as you go’ vouchers through to monthly and annual contracts.
It’s certainly been a busy year for Eutelsat Communications – which describes itself as is one of the world's leading satellite operators – especially in Africa, where in June it signed a distribution agreement for Eutelsat Konnect capacity over South Africa with infrastructure provider and telecommunications company Vox.
Earlier, in May, the company announced plans to expand its use of the Express Wi-Fi platform in partnership with Facebook to provide broadband services via satellite across several regions in sub-Saharan Africa.
In fact this activity extends right back to the start of the year when there was a framework agreement with distribution partner InterSat to provide connectivity services to the Post Office in Côte d’Ivoire.
