100G channels make their debut in Romania

Romania’s first 100G channels are now live, with the country’s leading cable operator providing services over its existing network.  RCS & RDS has implemented Optimized Multi-Layer Transport (OMLT) platforms from network solutions provider ECI Telecom to provide the necessary capacity, enabling the adoption of bandwidth-hungry applications across the country.

RCS & RDS has over four million subscribers, making it the largest internet provider in Romania. The suite of platforms – known as Apollo – has increased its network capacity tenfold, upgrading from 10G to 100G channels. The 100G channels cover about 700Km, connecting the core routers between Oradea and Bucharest, with minimal changes in the network.

The operator will be the first to offer 100G bandwidth in the country.  By using the Apollo over the XDM network, the company saves significant capex and opex expenses as both platforms share the same Network Management System, LightSoft.

“The move to 100G will enable RCS & RDS to better meet the needs of its customer base by quickly reacting to current and future bandwidth demands and reliably offering the highest capacity services available on the market today, as well as the ability to approach new markets”, said Valentin Popoviciu, Development Manager at RCS & RDS.
